The African Diaspora Federal Credit Union (ADF CU) was established to address a long-standing gap in financial access, economic empowerment, and community-centered banking for people of African descent living in the United States. Rooted in the shared heritage, values, and collective aspirations of the African Diaspora, ADF CU was created to provide culturally responsive financial services that promote economic stability, generational wealth, and community advancement.
The idea for the credit union grew from years of community advocacy, recognizing that many individuals and families across the African Diaspora face barriers to traditional banking—such as limited access to affordable credit, lack of culturally informed financial guidance, and challenges associated with immigration, entrepreneurship, and wealth-building. ADF CU was formed to meet these needs through a cooperative financial model designed by the community and for the community.
After extensive planning, regulatory preparation, and strong community support, the African Diaspora Federal Credit Union received its federal charter, becoming the first federally chartered credit union established specifically to serve Africans and African-descended people in the diaspora. With this historic achievement, ADF CU stands as a symbol of empowerment, self-determination, and unity.
Located in St. Louis, Missouri, the credit union draws its field of membership from individuals who identify with or support the African Diaspora community. ADF CU provides tailored products—including savings, checking, loans, financial education, and youth programs—to promote financial literacy, entrepreneurship, homeownership, and economic mobility.
- Guided by cooperative principles, ADF CU is committed to:
- Promoting financial inclusion and trust
- Supporting small businesses within the diaspora
- Strengthening families through accessible financial services
- Encouraging a culture of savings and investment
- Building a legacy of generational wealth
- The African Diaspora Federal Credit Union continues to grow as a financial home for the diaspora—uniting people, empowering communities, and building a stronger economic future for generations to come.
